The sun, a warm wind and the sweetest of atmospheres: today saw a gathering of the Toloxa Goxua extraordinary fair with the weekly Saturday market and the Tolosa Kantari singers. Over 25 stands, a cheesecake competition and more than 5,000 doughnuts handed out. People who say there’s always something to do on Saturdays in Tolosa are certainly not wrong!

This Saturday Tolosa woke up to superb weather, and from very early in the morning some twenty pastry cooks were already busy setting out their products in the huge marquis purposely set up for this foodie fair in the ‘Triangle’.

A total of more than 24 stands packed with tarts, cakes, biscuits, turron, chocolate and other sweetmeats offered an exceptional opportunity to taste (and buy) all of the new delicacies brought to us by these artisan bakers.

But apart from the fair itself, Tolosa Goxua was a participatory event: around a dozen boys and girls set about getting their hands in the dough as part of the “baker for a day” event to make some 5,000 doughnuts together with Tolosa’s pastry cooks: artisans from Eceiza, Gozona, Rafa Gorrotxategi, Saizar and Leyoko-Gorosti. The doughnuts were then handed out to those who had come along to have a look around the Triangle: running out in only 10 minutes!

This year’s baking competition, dedicated to the cheesecake, had more than 30 contestants. No two were the same: some were made with sponge cake and others with biscuit; some of them were baked in the oven while others had set in the fridge. The youngest among us played the biggest role, nervous as they waited for the result to be announced while telling one another about how they had made the cake the day before with their families.

Nor did those who flocked to Tolosa Goxua want to miss the traditional weekly market running every Saturday in the 3 main venues. And Tolosa Kantari also took to the street, bringing even more joy to the corners of Tolosa.
